The Lakes Community
The Lakes is an affluent master planned community located within the city limits of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is situated on a 2 square-mile plot of land located in the most western region of the Las Vegas valley, adjacent to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the Spring Mountains. The Lakes is made up of a series of gated communities consisting of over 300 large-scale single-family homes and condominiums scaled from 1,500 to over 12,000 square feet, as well as commercial areas consisting of offices and business headquarters.
The centerpiece of the community – and its namesake – is Lake Sahara, a large, man-made body of water that was built from the mid-1980’s to the mid-1990’s; originally the project called for two man-made lakes in the development, but the plans were later downgraded to simply one lake. Given the normally-hot climate in Southern Nevada, Lake Sahara offers an opportunity for residents to cool off on hot summer days and it provides recreational opportunities for boating, fishing and simply enjoying the view.
Lake Sahara covers nearly thirty acres and offers more than three miles of shoreline, most of which is privately owned by lakefront homeowners, making it one of the only places in Las Vegas where a resident can own their own shoreline on a private lake. There are also many greenbelt common areas for the enjoyment of all Lakes homeowners.
Lake Sahara is also well-known for its fishing, with the body of water teeming with 2-5 pound large-mouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish. In addition, Lake Sahara is a natural habitat for all kinds of wildlife, including endangered species such as razorback sucker fish, which are native to the Colorado River and are currently protected by state and federal agencies. In addition to fish, Lake Sahara is home to freshwater turtles, ducks, falcons, geese, herons, cormorants, grebes and many other types of migratory water fowl.
The Lakes homeowners are situated in the vicinity of shopping, dining, recreation, schools, art and entertainment, and the community is located near the I-215 beltway; a drive to the scenic beauty and recreational opportunities of Red Rock Canyon only takes 20 minutes. In addition, the community is surrounded by miles of tree-lined walking paths with numerous exercise stations and scenic rest areas that enjoy panoramic views of the lake, mountains, mature trees and hillsides. The Lakes area also enjoys one of the lowest crime rates in Southern Nevada, and its education needs are served by the well-regarded Clark County school district.
The Lakes also has a rich history in business; a subsidiary of Citibank, Citicards originally invested in the development of its main Payment Processing Center into the community’s commercial district in 1985, with the center soon becoming its centerpiece, creating 25,000 new jobs in the area and greatly raising its economic profile. The Citicards Payment Processing Center eventually become such a large endeavor that the United States Postal Service was forced to create two separate ZIP Codes The Lakes to cope with the large amount of mail that was sent and received by Citicards. Later, in the end of the 2000’s, Citibank has changed the facility over to mortgage processing before eventually closing it altogether in 2014.
